Smart Surgical Solutions (S3) is a MedTech spinout company from Imperial College London and they are developing the next generation of surgical navigation tools. S3’s revolutionary surgical navigation system has a unique approach by using a smartphone to position an implant intra-operatively for total knee replacement. It is designed to help a surgeon to position an implant precisely, to save the time needed and reduce the overall cost of the surgery, an option currently unavailable on the market, hence fulfilling a gap of high unmet clinical needs. We are a small, ambitious team based in the vibrant White City area of London, and are backed by Innovate UK grants and private investments.

We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated and experienced web developer to join our fast-growing team. The development will be front-end to back-end, so skills with HTML and MySQL-based databases are needed. Experience with Amazon Web Services and understanding of the software life cycle is essential, and experience with ISO 13485, and IEC 62304 is an advantage.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is self-starting, highly organized and motivated and who is dedicated to producing high-quality work. You will work closely with a research team at Imperial College and a development team at Smart Surgical Solutions. This fantastic opportunity will allow you to work closely with scientific research, orthopaedic surgeons, the product manager and the quality management team.

What does the role of a Web Developer involve?

  • Developing and maintaining high-quality, responsive web applications in compliance with the established requirements.
  • Taking project requirements and translating them into technical proposals and specifications
  • Working closely with other development team members, collaborating surgeons and our collaborating researchers at Imperial College London
  • Implementing current best practices and coding standards
  • Keeping up to date with industry trends and technologies and using a range of changing technologies
  • Providing inputs into future developments
  • Support the entire application lifecycle, including concept, design, test, and release to support
  • Ensure the performance, quality and responsiveness of applications
  • Write unit and UI tests to identify malfunctions

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate the following skills and experience:

  • A minimum of two years experience in the same or similar role
  • A strong working track record of developing and maintaining robust, responsive web applications
  • Knowledge of best practices for web performance, usability, SEO, security and data privacy
  • Experience in testing, integration and deployment processes
  • An understanding of server architecture and cloud-based hosting solutions - ideally Amazon Web Services
  • A demonstrable ability to proactively manage tasks, projects and issues
  • An appetite for emerging technologies and an ability to quickly pick up new skills
  • A hands-on, self-starting friendly attitude, be positive, passionate, persistent, creative and curious
